Flocculation: Definition and particularities

Flocculation is defined as a chemical process that brings together the finest debris to be enclosed by the filter. The flocculant uses a specific product that acts as a collector and acts as a magnet and an aggregator to retain the too fine particles released by the filter media, including algae debris that still foul and disturb your water after treatment. This same aggregator also acts against the invisible pollen that invites itself into the water. And finally, it destroys the dirt caused by oily products applied to the bather's body such as sun oils, creams, gel, etc.

The different types of flocculants and their use with filter media

• The cartridge flocculant or sock flocculant : (which is far from looking like the sock you wear in your shoes) is the first and most classic type of flocculant that fits both polished glass and sand filter. However, it does not conform to the cartridge filter at the risk of clogging and destroying your filter. The two brands that can offer you the best cartridge flocculants are Bayrol with its Superflock Plus and HTH with its Regularfloc. They are used in particular as maintenance and prevention products.
• Pellet flocculant adopts a pebble format that fits sand and cartridge filters as well as floating dispensers used regularly in above-ground pools. Among the most famous brands offering the best flocculant tablets, you have HTH for Unifloc and Piscimar for Cleanpool. They act as preventive and shock action.
• The liquid flocculant is useful during large cleanings despite its specific dimension which can make its use quite complicated during the season. If it acts as a shock action, it acts quickly to give a satisfactory result.

Note: If you have a diatomaceous earth filter, use only HTH uniflocculant. Ask a professional for advice if you need more information.

Carrying out a flocculation: the different steps

If you plan to carry out a flocculation, here are the procedures to follow:

• Check the ph and make sure it is balanced between 7.2 and 7.6 (if the difference is not respected, the flocculation will not be effective).
• Clean and rinse the filter
• Install the sock flocculants or pellets in the skimmer baskets according to the volume of the pool.
• Activate the filtration for 72 hours without stopping
• Wash and rinse the filter when the pressure gauge indicates a pressure of up to 400g.

If you follow these processes well, you will see that your water will be clear and crystalline after two to five days. You can repeat the operation for a better result. We recommend a semi-weekly use of the flocculant in tablet or cartridge form to complement your usual treatment. Thank you for your reading.
